This photograph was taken at the haute couture shows in Paris for Chloé, then under Karl Lagerfeld, in the late 1980s. It was shot on a Nikon 200 mm telephoto lens, a technique that was unusual for runway work at the time and has since become the standard for catwalk photography in fashion magazines.

The 1980s and 1990s were the golden age of the established fashion houses in Paris, Milan, New York and London: Yves Saint Laurent, Emanuel Ungaro, Christian Dior, Issey Miyake, Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Gianni Versace, Givenchy, Sonia Rykiel, Valentino Garavani, Claude Montana, Chloé, Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and many more. Supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Sayoko Yamaguchi graced those catwalks.

The artist photographed all of them and keeps an archive of more than 5,000 images. Some of those designers and models have since died, and the photographs are offered as valuable vintage works.

The artist was among the first photographers to shoot the catwalk with a long telephoto lens, a fresh approach at the time that is now common practice in fashion magazines. More recently the artist has begun making digital drawings inspired by these photographs, grouped into an Elegance series and a Collections series.
